The Unified Modeling Language is a powerful language for describing and specifying systems. It can be effectively applied to all kinds of software systems including real-time embedded systems (RTES). This tutorial focuses on the key aspects of the UML relevant to RTES, including capturing functional and performance requirements, identifying objects and classes within RTES, and tying requirements to class models, concurrency, and distribution design. It also discusses behavioral descriptions using sequence diagrams and state charts and the role of objects in high-reliability and safety-critical RTES design.
